The rockstar boyfriend and I went to my oldest baby’s Christmas program at school yesterday.
I loved it. From the (really terrible, honestly) strings to the so-so stories to the I-really-liked-it singing, it was two hours of standing up in the back of an elementary school gym that were really enjoyable.
Really.
The nostalgia was almost surreal. Watching those kids file onto the aluminum bleachers and take their spots, eyes trained on their music teacher down front, brought me back to to all those days I did the exact same thing.
“I loved this sort of thing in school,” I told the rockstar.
His feelings were about the exact opposite. Yes, he’s now a musician who performs, regularly, in front of people. I don’t know either.
Anyway, one of the classes even sang a song I had sung way back when. “There’ll be no school tomorrow, no school tomorrow, no school tomorrow if it snows!”
Loved that song.
And my son sang one about music making the world go round and another class sang one about a melody living within each of us.
Loved it all.
I had my red coat on, and at one point I looked around the gym at the other parents. Do you know how many other red-coated women I saw?
Lots.

I love red! I have a red coat that I wear regularly. I also recently picked out a red dress for New Years Eve.
Veronica, I love reading your posts. Monday of this week, my oldest daughter who is now in the 5th grade had her first band concert. Of course you have to go to support them but in the back of my mind I’m thinking that this is going to be an headache causing event. I remember walking past the band room early in the school year thinking how does this band teaching do this year after year listening to them squeak the wrong notes, and teaching these youngsters how to make music. Well quite to my surprise and that of many other viewers they played wonderfully together. Of course there were still a few squeaks, but it was exciting seeing all of these youngsters light up after their performance. I do look forward to their concerts and seeing what fantastic things they will accomplish. BTW Red is my favorite color
Veronica – I think it’s HYSTERICAL that Kyle hated school music programs yet became a musician. Like you, I loved being them as well as watching my kids, too. The grandpuppies just don’t put on shows like that!
I loved music programs in school too! We always had at least 2 or 3 every year, and I always loved getting all dolled up for them and having people come watch.

Think how weird it is for me that I truly remember you singing that song..and it seems like only yesterday. Sigh. Those programs are so bittersweet and with every child and yearly programs and concerts, I swell with pride and amazement at how fast life goes by. The scarf would remind me of those made long ago by my mother for her children.
I’m excited for my first school concert experience in a couple years! I’d also be totally excited if I got a scarf!
It is nice to know there is hope for my son!! LOL Like your boyfriend, my son does not like to perform in front of anybody (he’s 10), however, he likes to sing & he’s taking guitar lessons – I was wondering if they were going to be for his own private enjoyment for the rest of his life – maybe he’ll turn out like your boyfriend!
We are in the last year’s of the Christmas program (next year will be the last), so I’m kind of bittersweet about it.
